Tell us about yourself and your journey as an entrepreneur
My name is Shripat Jagirdar, and I am the third generation in my family’s textile business. I was born and brought up in South Bombay and have a deep love for travel and animals. Innovation and experimentation have always been my passion.
For me, being an entrepreneur means having the freedom to make and sell what you believe in and enjoy doing. My entrepreneurial journey started unknowingly when I sold tickets for the Sunburn music event while I was still in college. Later, I briefly entered forex trading, but soon realised that my real passion was textiles.
While growing up, textile discussions were common at the dining table, and they always had my attention. After graduation, I joined my family business in 2014, which was involved in traditional textile manufacturing. I started from the shop floor and learned the difficulties and processes at the root level.
In 2018, I began working on my own venture, Weaving Vibes. After two years of research and development, we officially launched commercial production in 2020.
What made you choose hemp fibres for clothing instead of traditional raw materials? What role does hemp play in today’s environment?
When I joined the family business, we were manufacturing traditional textile fabrics such as cotton and cotton blends. I was looking for sustainable business opportunities when I came across hemp. Once I learned about hemp, its properties and its possibilities, I immediately became interested in developing hemp-based textiles.
Hemp plays an important role from both agricultural and fashion perspectives. It can absorb carbon dioxide, support soil health and require less water compared with cotton. It also grows faster than many conventional crops, which can benefit farmers through better crop rotation and lower input requirements.
On the fashion side, hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres in the world. Products made from hemp fabrics can have a longer and healthier lifespan than regular fabrics. Hemp fabrics are also naturally antimicrobial and UV-resistant, and they can biodegrade more responsibly at the end of their life cycle.
Do you source hemp locally or import it?
At present, we import hemp fibres and yarns from several countries because textile-grade hemp cultivation is still limited in India. To build a strong fibre-to-fashion ecosystem in sustainable fabrics, India needs wider and more structured cultivation of industrial hemp.
This can benefit farmers, manufacturers, the environment and future generations by making sustainable textile raw materials more accessible.
Hemp is slowly taking its place in India commercially. Why should people move toward hemp-based clothing?
Fast fashion is one of the contributors to pollution, and many garments today are made from non-sustainable fabric compositions. Hemp has started gaining commercial attention in India because it offers a more responsible option for brands and consumers.
As more people make environmentally conscious choices, hemp-based clothing can become one of the practical ways to reduce fashion’s environmental impact. It offers durability, comfort and sustainability, making it suitable for modern conscious clothing.

Our team is a group of enthusiastic and creative young people who innovate every day to make natural textiles, fabrics, weaves, yarns and clothing more sustainable and affordable.
What keeps them going is the passion to create awareness and educate people about how small choices in textiles and fashion can contribute to a better future for the next generation.
Tell us about the machinery and technology involved in hemp-based clothing
Hemp-based clothing does not require completely different machinery from regular cotton-based clothing. The machinery and technology are largely similar, but there are certain process adjustments needed to produce premium-quality hemp fabrics.
The technology behind hemp is still developing because it is a newer subject for many manufacturers in terms of applications, handling and large-scale production. With more research and adoption, the manufacturing process will become even more refined.
What would you like to say to budding entrepreneurs?
Do something that makes you happy, in business and in life. Human beings need wealth, health and happiness. Wealth can be earned and enjoyed, but what good is it if you are not healthy and happy? Health is important too, but what good is it if you are not happy?
Happiness is a state of mind. It is free, regardless of whether you are wealthy or healthy. Whatever you do, if it wakes you up with a smile and puts you back in bed with a smile, it is worth it.
